BluMax: Protect Your Eyes from UV and Blue light

Extended use of Devices exposes you to Harmful Blue Light

All devices like the laptop, tablet, smartphone, TV and other monitors use Screen technologies that emit Blue Light. Some Blue Light is typically acceptable to the eye and is normal. Extended exposure to this light can cause a disruption in the Circadian Rhythm and may cause damage to the eyes.

During this deadly pandemic and the lockdown, we are forced to stay at home. As a consequence, many of our everyday activities have moved online. Your work may have moved online and so have your children’s school. In addition to this, we use devices like the smart TV, tablets, smartphones and laptops to access entertainment. All of these devices emit HEV (High Energy Visible) which is referred to as Blue Light. Under normal circumstances our exposure to this is limited to our hours at work. Even during work hours, some of us are exposed to it for extended periods. In this time of lockdown, this exposure is compounded. Our work hours are extended beyond the typical 9 to 5 or 6 and into the night in many cases. Children are continually exposed to this either for school or entertainment. This extended use which is out of the normal is of concern when considering our health, especially the health of our eyes.

But, what can we do about this? The lockdown and Work or School From Home is here for at least the foreseeable future. Even after that, we may experience parts of this culture in the future going forward. With this reality in mind, we need to address the risk. There are some basic measures we can take to protect our eyes and stay healthy.

1. Take a Break

For every half hour or at least an hour of screen time take a short break from the screen. Take a walk or talk to a loved one. This will allow your eyes and your brain to relax and reset.

2. Stay Hydrated

Have a bottle of water by your side. Take sip whenever you can. This will help your body stay hydrated. Extended strain can cause dehydration and a loss in energy.

3. Pace Yourself

Have a schedule of your favorite shows. Spread the schedule out throughout the week and work family screen time into it. This will reduce binge watching and spread the screen time out over a period.

4. Use Protective Eye Wear

Use eye wear with protective coating to filter UV and Blue Light such as the BluMax coated eye wear.

With these simple steps we can stay healthy and stay safe during this pandemic. Please contact us if you need more information or would like a consultation. Our optometrists are here to help!
